Brooklyn man Erick Lewis sentenced to 174 years in prison for sex attacks

A 23-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced to 174 years in prison on Wednesday after his DNA linked him to three sex attacks.

Erick Lewis preyed on women in his Crown Heights neighborhood, attacking his victims in their buildings over a nine-month period two years ago.

He raped and robbed one woman at gunpoint and forced a second to perform oral sex in an elevator.

Lewis sexually assaulted a third woman, said prosecutors Elizabeth Doerfler and Christopher Laline of the Brooklyn District Attorney's Sex Crimes Bureau.

Lewis was identified as a predator through his DNA, a sample of which he was forced to give to the NYPD after a robbery arrest that predated the attacks.

The suspect in the 1976 disappearance of Columbia waitress Becky Doisy was arrested at his home in Georgia on Aug. 25 and remains in Gwinnett County Jail.




Johnny Wright: Boone County murder trial set for Nov. 18
Johnny Wright is being charged with making a false or fraudulent statement to the Georgia Department of Driver Services when he obtained a driver’s license under a false name. The charge is a felony and carries with it a possible fine of $1,000 and imprisonment for one to five years. No bond has been set in the case.

Authorities believe Wright has been living under the assumed name Errol Edwards for decades and is believed to have used an assumed Social Security number to apply for jobs and to vote.

An arrest warrant was issued in 1985 charging Wright with murder in Doisy’s slaying, but his whereabouts remained unknown to Columbia police until a year ago, when he walked into a Lawrenceville, Ga., police station and asked for a background check for a job. Wright proffered a week-old ID card with his real name: John Wright. The background check triggered an FBI database hit for the second-degree murder warrant in the Doisy case.

And that isn’t Wright’s only legal problem. Wright’s arrest at his home Aug. 25 was prompted by the discovery of a warrant stemming from a 1977 stealing charge in St. Louis County. Wright pleaded guilty at the time and was sentenced to five years probation. When Wright left Missouri in the late 1970s, according to the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, he violated his probation.

At the time of his arrest in 1977, Wright gave police the name John Oscar Wright Jr. and a false birth date, according to the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office. The discrepancy explains why the active warrant wasn’t detected last year when Wright was arrested in Georgia. A hearing was held in the case on Aug. 26, and Judge Michael Jamison elected not to extradite Wright on the probation violation charge. A probation violation hearing is set for Oct. 14 in St. Louis County.

It is unclear how the new legal woes will affect Wright’s murder trial, which is set to begin Nov. 18 in Boone County. Wright’s attorney, Cleveland Tyson, said he is going “full-speed ahead,” believing it will take place as scheduled. If Wright is unable to reach a plea deal with Georgia authorities so he can be released by that time, the state of Missouri would have to pay to have him extradited.

Tyson believes the Georgia charges are, in part, a prosecution tactic. “The way I honestly look at it is the case here in Missouri is, quite frankly, pretty weak,” Tyson said. “And maybe they’re trying to accumulate as much evidence as possible to use in their trial here.”

Boone County prosecutors can submit evidence of Wright’s flight from the state and his subsequent deception about his identity as proof of his “consciousness of guilt” in a murder trial.

Assistant Boone County Prosecutor Richard Hicks said: “We often say that. If the guy fled, ‘Why are you fleeing if you’re not guilty? Why are you giving a fake name when the police officer arrested you?’ I think it’s probative.”

Doisy’s sister, Kathy, who lives in Columbia, was heartened by the news. She said she believes it increases the chances Wright will serve time in prison.

“I’m really hoping that one of the judges will recognize that this guy was getting away, literally, with murder for years,” Doisy said. “I don’t care what he goes to jail for, I just want him to spend some time in prison.”
