Suspect In Double Murder Arrested

Detroit (WWJ) -- A Detroit man wanted in a double murder in which an eight-year old girl called 911 to report the shooting is in jail in California.

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans Friday announced U.S. Marshals, using information from Detroit investigators, arrested 42-year old Derrick Smith on a street in suburban Los Angeles.
Smith was wanted on two counts of murder in the March 1 shooting deaths of 26-year-old Monica Botello and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Purcell Carson, in the basement of Carson's Detroit home on Glastonbury Street.

Botello's daughter pleaded for help in a call to a 911 dispatcher, but the family was visiting the house and the girl didn't know the address and couldn't tell police how to get there. The girl eventually got the address from the front of the house.

Evans said police executed seven search warrants in an effort to obtain information as to Smith’s whereabouts. Some of that information led them to California where Smith has some family ties.

At the time of his arrest, Smith reportedly asked arresting officers, “who snitched on me?”

Detroit police are making arrangements to bring Smith back to Detroit to face charges.
